FAQ Registration Volunteer Sessions Schedule

Welcome to Web2Open—the free unconference side of Web 2.0 Expo! Register for a pass with the code “websf10opn” (good for a free Expo pass, described below, or $100 off the full conference rate ).

Web2Open takes place Tuesday, May 4th & Wednesday, May 5th

Web2Open is Web 2.0 Expo’s unconference—a free, community-driven event where you can connect with other participants to discuss Web 2.0 topics and questions. As an unconference , Web2Open lets attendees create sessions using an onsite grid , and it emphasizes participation and conversation over presentations.

What’s the format of this unconference?

Open-grid Sessions. Show up. Propose a topic you’d like to discuss. Claim an available spot in the daily grid. Lead a discussion.

To offer an Open session, simply head to the 2nd floor of Moscone West the day you want to hold the session (either May 4 or 5) and find the whiteboard grid. Find an open space on the grid and fill in your topic. We’ll have approximately 20 open slots, and it’s first come, first served. Intros and sign-ups start at 9:00am on May 4 and 10:45am on May 5.

Hybrid Sessions. We’re picking a session a day from the main conference track that will be open to all Web2Open attendees. Then we’re following those presentations with discussions in the Web2Open. See more details on our sessions page .

There will also be a handful of programmed content aimed at giving you practical insights through helpful discussions and tutorials. All talks will emphasize participation and conversation. Presentations are limited.

The event is a great way to network with other attendees, learn more about elements of Web 2.0, and share your experience!

Hybrid Sessions, what are they exactly?

We’ve got a strong line up of speakers in the main conference program so we will be selecting three sessions as hybrid talks, accessible to Web2Open registrants. These sessions will be followed with same-topic, speaker-led discussions in the Web2Open rooms. Visit the schedule to see the selected hybrids and additional sessions.

Web2Open vs. Birds of a Feather (BoF) Sessions

Web2Open sessions are aimed at creating a forum for community dialogue and discussion around topics of interest (last year’s included sessions like Entrepreneurship Hacks and Troll Whispering), and take place concurrently with Web 2.0 Expo sessions during the day. BoFs provide the space and opportunity for organizations and groups to connect, network, and share ideas (e.g. Linux, Higher Education) after sessions end for the day. To submit a BoF, please visit the Birds of a Feather page.
