Flickr was one of the first popular Web 2.0 web sites: a social photo sharing web site that helped popularize tagging. Flickr was born of an attempt to make a browser-based Massively Multiplayer Online Game about information exchange: “Game Neverending.”
Today, the children of Flickr are continuing to work massively multiplayer game mechanics into social web sites. This panel will discuss strategies, models, and pitfalls for harnessing the power of play to promote the social Web.
Panelists include people working on backend server architecture for adding game functionality to social networks, inventors transforming non-participating sites into online games, Firefox extensions making play in the web browser, and other people sneaking fun into everyday online life.
Justin Hall creates and explores simulation in online media. He created one of the early extensive home pages, “Justin’s Links from the Underground” in January 1994. In 2004, the New York Times Magazine referred to him as “the founding father of personal bloggers.” In May 2007, Hall graduated with an MFA from the Interactive Media Division at the University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts. His professional experience includes grunt work and strategy at HotWired, electric minds, ZDTV, Gamers.com, Nokia’s TheFeature.com and the Creative Artists Agency.
Today, Hall is CEO of GameLayers, a small game design company building playful experiences in your web browser.
Rajat Paharia is the founder and CEO of Bunchball. An entrepreneur at heart, Rajat’s skill set combines a unique understanding of technology and design that stems from a four year career at design firm IDEO where he was co-director of the Software Experiences Practice. While there he worked with clients including AT&T Wireless, Avaya, Microsoft, McDonald’s, HP and Philips. Before IDEO, Rajat worked at Philips Consumer Electronics, IBM Research and ViewStar. He has a Masters degree in Computer Science from Stanford University, with a focus on Human Computer Interaction, and an undergraduate degree from the University of California Berkeley.
Christopher D. Chapman (also known as m3mnoch) is an Entrepreneur, Technologist and utter Video Game Snob.
Gabe Zichermann developed the concept for rmbr in early 2007 after realizing that he had stopped enjoying the process of dealing with his friends’ online photos, and that a game-centric approach might fix the problem. Gabe is a ten-year games industry veteran, having previously worked for CMP Media on the Game Developers Conference, Gamasutra and Game Developer magazine, as well as helping to launch and guide Trymedia Systems from start to sale as its head of Strategy and Marketing. Prior to joining the games industry, Zichermann held roles with Cisco, CheckPoint Software and Nortel/Bay Networks. Now residing in New York City, Gabe frequently muses about why the city that has everything can’t make a good burrito.
