Drupal is a PHP-based Open Source web content management system (CMS) which has exploded in popularity over the past two years. Described as WordPress-on-steroids, Drupal can be used to assemble features-rich enterprise-level websites by “snapping together” many of Drupal’s 6,000+ modules. Drupal now powers WhiteHouse.gov, Examiner.com, FastCompany.com, and thousands of other popular sites. Many media companies such as Sony Music and Warner Brothers Records have standardized on Drupal to run many of their sites (such as MichaelJackson.com, Britney.com, and JenniferLopez.com). Many universities such as Yale, Brown, and University of Texas are also using Drupal as their supported platform.
Jeff Robbins is the co-founder of Lullabot and also the co-author of O’Reilly’s “Using Drupal”. In this session Jeff will talk about Drupal’s unique history and community as well as the philosophies and methodologies driving the project. He’ll highlight many of Drupal features, show how Drupal sites are assembled, and illustrate what has made Drupal so popular. He’ll talk about many of the pros and cons of the platform and let attendees know what to expect and plan for when tackling a Drupal project. If you’ve been trying to get your head around Drupal or you are considering it for your next web project, this session will help you to understand why Drupal has become so popular and how it can streamline the development of your next web project.
Jeff Robbins is the co-founder and CEO of Lullabot, one of the most prominent training, consulting, and development companies involved with Drupal. Lullabot has helped to launch many of Drupal’s largest sites including those for Sony Music, Lifetime Television, Verizon, MTV, the Grammys, DC Comics, Fast Company, Harvard University, Walmart, and others.
Lullabot employs many of Drupal’s most prominent developers and community members. The company also runs world-wide Drupal workshops and has released a series of Drupal training videos which teaches everything from Drupal site set-up and configuration to theming and Drupal module development. Lullabot’s free Drupal podcast has advocated for Drupal since 2006 and has been a great on-ramp for many people in the Drupal community.
Jeff has been building websites since 1993, when he worked on O’Reilly’s Global Network Navigator, the world’s first commercially supported website. Jeff is also co-author of O’Reilly’s Using Drupal.
