For mainstream media to survive, if not thrive, it must embrace social media and take on the critical role of curator of the conversation. For social media to remain relevant and avoid slipping further into a wall of noise, it must work hand in hand with news organizations to create a symbiotic storytelling relationship. The result will be a new kind of curated grassroots conversation that has the authenticity of social media and the reach and authority of mainstream media.

Katharine Zaleski is the Executive Producer and Head of Digital News Products for the Washington Post. She’s often asked what that title actually means since it sounds so complicated and long. In a nutshell, Katharine focuses on up to the minute newsroom goals for building traffic as well as shaping the Post’s digital road map. She and her team work with the homepage, topics editors, photo and video departments, and the rest of the newsroom to make sure large audiences are not only coming to the Post, but that they can easily chew on more of the Post’s great content once they land. The rest of Katharine’s time is focused on building the Post’s digital products, including mobile, social media integrations, site redesigns and all other digital additions and enhancements to the site. Katharine came to this amazingly multifaceted job after she was the Senior News Editor at the Huffington Post from the month it launched in May, 2005 until October, 2009. Before the Huffington Post, Katharine had multiple internships and jobs at CNN, culminating as the person in charge of graphics (all the written content you see on the screen) for CNN’s “American Morning”. After a wonderful childhood in New York City, Katharine was educated in the middle of nowhere at Dartmouth College. She graduated in 2003 as a history major. Contrary to public opinion, a history degree gives you ample knowledge to build a career in digital journalism. You learn a lot about mistakes made in the past.
