What if instead of sending messages between your browser and web server you could directly synchonize your business objects between the two? GWT allows you to write your in-browser code in Java, and XSTM manages communications between clients and the server. Objects are updated using transactions and conflicts are handled between clients working on same objects.
XSTM has similarities with Adobe Flex Data Services.
