Adding Location to Web 2.0 Apps

Andrew Turner, Hacker Integrator, HighEarthOrbit
Mikel Maron, mapufacture

Track: Web 2.0 Fundamentals
Date: Tuesday, April 17
Time: 2:40pm - 3:30pm
Location: 2008

Cartography has enabled exploration and discovery for ages. Like the transformation of paper to hypertext, maps have transitioned from arcane lines and arcs to dynamic displays of geographic information. Web sites like MapQuest and Yahoo! Maps helped lead the way in online geography. More recently, the release of GoogleMaps demonstrated to web developers and users the possibilities of navigation and opened a floodgate of interest in online mapping.

This talk will cover the many mapping tools shaping cartography in Web 2.0. It will present standards like GeoRSS and Microformats, as geocoders, aggregators, and APIs that enable the online mapping revolution; and examples of how these tools are used in popular sites, blogs, wikis, and applications. In addition, there is a large community of Geohackers that are mixing and mashing these tools in new and creative ways. We'll discuss the community and how to get involved.
